The School of Athens, An embodiment of classical antiquity.

'The school of Athens' painted between 1509 and 1510 signifies philosophy through uniting many intellectuals from classical antiquity. Amongst the work' Raphael has portrayed philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras and Socrates. The mystery about this piece is that not all the characters that are depicted can be identified with certainty rather allowing the audience to think and wonder about the work. After all isn’t that what the work embodies: thinking?
I was fortunate to see this piece in person in the Vatican City. As I gazed over the immensely detailed work I was astonished by Raphael's talent, which led me to further research this piece, over time my appreciation grew. The ideals from many of the people portrayed in this work greatly influence my way of life and due to this I feel my connection is on a very personal level. On the right hand corner Raphael portrays himself, Unlike most others in this work he is gazing back at his audience, this allows the viewers to connect with the artist.

Street art influence...

One of my favourite contemporary artists is Banksy, his talent is recognised and praised by many around the world. With streets as his prime medium, the man is masked in order to successfully share his concerns and thoughts with us. Passion is the driving force behind the progress and success of this incredible artist. Banksy challenges the "norm" and evokes strong emotions from the public on a range of societal topics through a distinct stencilling and storytelling style. The work of Banksy has been influencing my art making practice for several years; there is always an underlying message within each piece. Banksy's approach to art making is significant through his emphasis on political issues and drawing upon the nature of the world today.

This week I explored my current interest in 'street' and 'grunge' styles. The Banksy influence is currently seeping into all aspects of my design and styling process.

The shirt alludes to the great seal of the United States designed in a stylistic manner enclosed within an overturned triangle.
Of course in order to portray the 'grunge' look a pair of ripped denim completes the ensemble. In addition the oversized leather jacket enhances the aesthetic appeal whilst the sunglasses encompass a steam punk character.
